The most common type of examiner used to examine the retina at the back of the eye consists of a concave mirror that reflects a small light from within the instrument. The doctor examines the eye by looking directly into the patient's eye through a monocular eyepiece. This is possible by rotating the discs of different lenses inside the instrument and looking at different depths of the eye at different magnifications. A routine examination of the eye can be performed very quickly in the doctor's office.

This passage is going to talk about the followings of ophthalmoscope:

1) History of ophthalmoscope

2) What is an ophthalmoscope?

3) How is the ophthalmoscope test performed?

1) History of ophthalmoscope

If a more thorough examination is needed, the doctor sometimes dilates the patient's pupil beforehand, and the inventor, Charles Babbage, invented an early version of the light microscope in 1847 The above types of inspection glasses are also known as direct inspection glasses Less commonly used are indirect inspection glasses, although they work on essentially the same principle. They usually consist of a light attached to a headband worn by a doctor. The physician examines the eye with a handheld lens. This type of instrument provides a wider field of view and is still quite useful, even if the lens of the eye has a cataract that would otherwise blur the field of vision. like many inventions, it can be argued that more than one person invented the inspection glasses. in 1823, Johannes Purkinje (Johannes Purkinje) invented the inspection glasses. in 1847, Charles Babbage (who invented a very powerful early fundoscope but did not widely publicize the invention, was Hermann von Helmholtz, a German physician in 1850. He made slight modifications to the early design and created a model for demonstration purposes. For these reasons, Helmholtz is often credited with this invention. The first people to develop a scope similar to what we know as a modern scope were Josh Zell and Jon Palumbo, who in 1915 invented a handheld scope similar to those used in doctors' offices today.

2) What is an ophthalmoscope?

The ophthalmoscope is an examination of the back of the eye (fundus), which includes the retina, optic disc, choroid and blood vessels. There are two types of ophthalmoscope: direct ophthalmoscope and indirect ophthalmoscope.

3) How is the ophthalmoscope test performed?

There are different types of ophthalmoscope.

Direct ophthalmoscope. You will sit in a dark room. The healthcare provider performs this exam using an instrument called a detector lens, which passes a beam of light through the pupil. The detector is about the size of a flashlight. It has light and different tiny lenses that allow the provider to look at the back of the eye.

Indirect inspection glasses. You will be lying or half lying down. The provider opens his or her eyes while using an instrument worn on the head to shine a very bright light into the eyes. (The instrument looks like a miner's lamp.) The provider looks through a lens close to your eye behind the eye. A small blunt-tipped probe is used to apply some pressure to the eye. You will be asked to look in all directions. This test is usually used to look for retinal detachment.

Slit lamp examination of the eye. You will be seated in a chair and have the instrument placed in front of you. You will be asked to rest your chin and forehead on the support to keep your head stable. The provider will use the microscope portion of the slit lamp and a small lens near the front of the eye. Providers can see approximately the same content with this technique as with the indirect inspection lens, but at a higher magnification.

The examination of the inspection lens will take approximately 5 to 10 minutes.
