How do you use a pediatric urine bag?
Step 1: Wash Your Hands
Begin by thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water to prevent contamination.
Step 2: Clean the Infant’s Genital Area
Gently clean the baby’s genital area using a mild antiseptic wipe or soap and water.Allow the area to dry completely before applying the bag. Moisture can affect the adhesive and cause leakage.
Step 3: Choose the Correct Bag Type
Use a male-specific or female-specific pediatric urine bag to ensure a good fit and reduce leakage.
Step 4: Prepare the Bag
Open the sterile packaging carefully.Peel off the protective backing to expose the adhesive area.
Step 5: Apply the Bag
For boys: Place the penis inside the bag's opening and press the adhesive area gently but firmly around the base. For girls: Position the bag over the labia, ensuring full coverage and pressing the adhesive around the genital area securely.
Step 6: Secure the Bag
Ensure the bag is attached firmly but gently—don’t press too hard to avoid discomfort.Diaper the baby as usual to help hold the bag in place.
Step 7: Monitor for Urine Collection
Check the bag periodically. Infants typically urinate within 30 to 60 minutes after feeding.
Step 8: Remove the Bag Carefully
Once the baby has urinated, gently peel off the bag from the skin.If needed, use a warm, damp cloth to help loosen the adhesive.
Step 9: Transfer the Urine (If Required)
If a lab sample is needed, pour the urine from the bag into a sterile specimen container.Label the sample as required.
Step 10: Dispose of the Bag
Discard the used urine bag in a medical waste bin or as per local waste disposal regulations.Wash your hands again.
