Introduction
Medical sharps box is a container specially used for safely collecting and disposing of medical waste sharps. Such sharps include needles, surgical blades, glass test tubes, metal sharp objects, etc. Improper handling can easily cause punctures or cuts to medical staff, and even cause infection. Therefore, medical sharps boxes play an important role in the safety management of medical places.
Features
High-strength puncture-resistant design: usually adopts puncture-resistant high-density polypropylene material to ensure that the sharps box will not be punctured when storing sharp objects, protecting the safety of surrounding personnel.
Convenient delivery design: The opening design of the sharps box generally allows one-handed operation, which is convenient for medical staff to quickly deliver sharps while avoiding direct contact with sharp objects.
Various capacities and specifications: Sharps boxes have a variety of capacity specifications, from small portable sharps boxes to large centralized recycling containers, to meet the needs of different places. Small sharps boxes are suitable for clinics, mobile medical vehicles and other places, while large ones are more suitable for high-frequency use places such as operating rooms and inpatient departments.
Color identification: usually bright colors such as red, yellow, etc. are used for quick identification to avoid misuse or mixing.
Importance
In medical environments, the risk of infection caused by sharp wounds is very high, especially contaminated sharps, which may spread HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, etc. For medical staff, using a sharps box can reduce the risk of occupational injuries and enhance a sense of security.
Standard
1. The medical sharps box is made of hard materials as a whole and is sealed to ensure that the sharps contained in the sharps box will not leak under normal use. Once the sharps box is sealed, it cannot be opened again without being damaged.
2. The sharps box is puncture-proof, and the sharps such as syringe needles and broken glass contained in it cannot puncture the sharps box.
3. The sharps box is yellow in color, and the side of the box is marked with "damaging waste".
4. A medical waste warning sign should be printed on the sharps box.
5. A fully filled sharps box is dropped vertically from a height of 1.5m to a concrete floor for three consecutive times, and the sharps box will not be broken or punctured.
6. The sharps box is easy to incinerate, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics must not be used as raw materials for manufacturing.
7. The specifications and dimensions of the sharps box can be determined according to user requirements.
How to use the sharps box?
1. When installing, fasten the lid and the barrel body together. The lid is not rotated up but fastened downwards.
2. The red area on the lid can be rotated. Do not rotate it closed during use. It cannot be opened after closing.
3. Close the red area after use, and you can hear a "click" after closing.
4. When using the sharps box, fill in the name of the using department and the start time of use on the medical sharps box label.
5. Place the sharps box securely in the right place, with the "medical waste" label facing outwards, open the red lid and throw the sharps into the sharps box facing the entrance.
Precautions for using sharps boxes
1. Choose a sharps box of appropriate size according to the sharps used in medical care operations, and the sharps can be placed intact.
2. The sharps box must be assembled correctly, and the sharps box must be checked to see if it is intact before use.
3. The sharps box must not be filled to the top, and can only be filled to 3/4 of the capacity at most, and must not exceed the warning line.
4. The seal must be tight and tight, and reopening is strictly prohibited.
5. Follow the prevention guidelines and avoid re-capping the needle with both hands. If you need to re-cap, you should use one-handed operation techniques to complete it. It is prohibited to re-cap disposable needles used on real people.
6. Do not separate the needle and syringe, and the entire set of needles should be discarded.
7. Do not bend, damage or directly dispose of used needles with your hands.
8. It is forbidden to put non-sharp waste into the sharps box.
9. It should not be placed in the collection bag during transportation to prevent sharp injuries during transportation. The sharps box can only be carefully carried by the handle, and the sharps box should be kept away from the body.
10. The sharps box should be placed in a safe and appropriate place after use.
11. The outer surface of the sharps box must not be stained with any medical waste. When contaminated, the contaminated area should be disinfected and an additional layer of packaging should be added if necessary.
12. Throwing and dropping are strictly prohibited during transportation to avoid damage to the packaging and leakage of medical waste.
These misunderstandings in the use of sharps boxes
1. The nursing staff placed the ampoule after dispensing in the curved tray first, and then dumped the sharps in the curved tray into the uncovered sharps box. This violates the principle that sharps should not be sorted twice.
2. If the lid of the sharps box is not tightened during use, the risk of occupational exposure will increase when the lid is added.
3. The sharps box is randomly placed on the lower level of the treatment cart. It is inconvenient to place needles and other sharps when the nursing staff performs infusion operations, which increases the chance of secondary sorting and occupational exposure.
4. The sharps box is overflowing on the ground, and the nurse picks up the overflowing needles and other sharps with bare hands. This violates the principle that when the sharps reach 3/4 of the marked capacity of the sharps box, they should be replaced immediately.
Disposal
Discarded sharps boxes need to be collected according to the medical waste disposal process and transported and destroyed by professional medical waste disposal companies. High-temperature incineration or harmless treatment is usually used to avoid environmental pollution and the spread of pathogens.
